AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL
Australia’s football is a hybrid structure that combines a closed professional league with an open state-based pyramid.
At the top is the A-League Men, the national professional competition. It operates under a franchise model, meaning there is no promotion or relegation.
Below the A-League is the National Premier Leagues (NPL), which represent the top level of football in each stateand are played at a semi-professional level. The NPL is standardized nationwide but run by state federations. Under the NPL, there are state leagues (League One, League Two, etc.) and local leagues, all connected through a promotion and relegation system.
SYDNEY FOOTBALL SYSTEM

A-League: Closed national professional league
-
NPL: State-based top leagues, semi-professional
-
League One/Two: Open pyramid with promotion and relegation
This system allows the A-League to operate commercially while the NPL and state leagues serve as key pathways for player development, youth progression, and international players seeking professional opportunities.
